The country needs a few less auto dealers
The Detroit News
Advertisement Average sales for Toyota and Honda dealers total 1100 vehicles per year or nearly three times those for GM and Chrysler dealers. Undersized sales and service facilities cost the domestic companies billions of dollars in lost sales revenues annually and damage their brands’ reputations leading to still larger future sales and revenue losses. Auto sales scarcely qualify as a free market. But that’s because dealers have persuaded state legislatures to enact laws that protect them from competition. In many areas of the country automobile franchise boards have made it nearly impossible for Detroit’s manufacturers to terminate non-performing dealers and to replace them with new and more efficient dealers. Instead they often are forced to sell their product through antiquated dealer operations located where customers used to shop decades ago. Three independent peer-reviewed studies including one by economists at the Federal Trade Commission show that in areas where there has been rapid population growth and where the dealer-dominated review boards have prevented domestic auto companies from establishing new dealers that are located “too close” to existing dealers consumers have been forced to pay prices as much as 5 percent higher than in areas without such restrictions.
