Auto parts maker shutting down N. Indiana plant

The company has told state officials that its plant in thenortheastern Indiana town of Grabill would be closed for anindefinite period. The Allen Park Mich. -based auto parts manufacturer did not givea reason for the closure but it cited the loss of a major customerwhen announcing planned layoffs at another Indiana plant lastmonth. Meridian told Shelbyville officials last week that it wasshutting down its 295-worker factory in that central Indiana city.

Fiat has been looking for a new Chinese partner since it terminated a venture with Nanjing Auto in late 2007. A planned joint venture with Chery Automobile China’s largest domestic carmaker had been scheduled to start production this year but that project was put on indefinite hold in March. “It’s always a good idea to find a partner in the largest auto market” Gregor Claussen an auto analyst at Commerzbank in Frankfurt said of the deal Monday.
