They then delivered a sobering message tothe company’s top executives calling for a “fundamental restructuring” of theindustry an bama Administration official said. The day marked the first time that members of bama’s auto-industry task forcetraveled to Detroit as part of their review of the companies and it followedweeks of meetings in Washington involving industry officials and electedlawmakers. The task force led by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and WhiteHouse economic adviser Lawrence Summers is reviewing requests from GM andChrsyler for nearly $22 billion in new loans and officials have characterizedthe meetings as part of broad fact-gathering effort. Monday’s meetings were expected to involve two outside advisers who areserving on the task force Ron Bloom and Steven Rattner according to peoplewith knowledge of the meetings. The task force members met with seniormanagement at GM and Chrsyler after a morning meeting with Ron Gettelfingerpresident of the United Auto Workers and other union leaders theadministration official said. The task force members test-drove GM’s Chevrolet Volt and a fuel-cell conceptcar and toured the assembly line of the Dodge Ram pickup the official said.

n Monday members of President bama’s task force on the auto industry crisis in Detroit discussed supplier struggles Chrysler’s potential partnership with Fiat and other aspects of what an administration official involved in the talks called “big challenges” for the domestic carmakers. “There’s no question we recognize the urgency of the situation” the administration official who was not authorized to speak publicly told The Detroit News after top advisers to the task force met with officials from General Motors Corp. Chrysler LLC and the United Auto Workers. Advertisement The group included Steve Rattner and Ronald Bloom two top advisers to the cabinet-level task force President Barack bama appointed last month. The group toured GM’s Technical Center in Warren where members were able to test-drive technology going into the Chevrolet Volt hybrid electric car and Chrysler’s Warren Truck Assembly plant and saw the company’s hybrid and electric-vehicle technology.

The Mexican Auto Industry Association or AMIA said production last monthfell 38% from February 2008 to 107547 units following a 51% year-on-year dropin January. Exports in February were down 45% to 77833 units after falling 57% inJanuary. “This is the worst two months since 1995 when our country was in crisis”said Eduardo Solis president of AMIA at a press conference. “But back then we had the escape route of trade the international markets”Solis said.
