GM Auditors Raise Doubt n Auto Maker’s Viability

’s (GM) auditors cast doubt Thursday on the Detroit automaker’s ability to survive without more U. government loans in a forebodingassessment of the company’s financial plight. GM’s continuing losses negative net worth and an inability to generate cashfor continued operations led the auditors to determine there was substantialdoubt that the company can survive. GM warned last week it may not be able toable meet its auditors’ “going concern” requirements.

But they clashed again with auto industry supporters at a daylong hearing over whether the EPA should grant California’s request to allow it and 13 other states to set their own emission standards.

The undersized Cobo could lose the auto show which brings in an estimated $500 million to the region each year if the building isn’t renovated and expanded. The auto show is committed to the venue through 2010 but organizers have said the deteriorating facilities could force some vendors to bypass the annual event. But pushed by Conyers the council voted 5-3 to nix the transfer plan. Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. vetoed the council vote Wednesday.

’s (GM)viability sent the auto maker’s shares tumbling the White House renewed itscommitment to a “restructured and retooled” U. auto industry and said it islooking at potential government assistance for a variety of sectors. “I don’t think it comes as a big surprise to many that the auto industry is incrisis” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. “If you look at the plans thatwere submitted recently by GM and Chrysler – and certainly if you look at lastmonth’s auto sales – you understand the level and the depth of the crisis thatthe auto industry is in.
