At the meeting which is currently underway the two officials are expected toofficially begin considering recovery plans put forth by General Motors Corp. (GM) and Chrysler LLC. Both auto firms have requested billions of dollars inadditional aid. Meanwhile the Saab Automobile division of General Motors Friday filed forcreditor protection after failing to secure funds from both the Swedishgovernment and its parent. n Tuesday the troubled companies said they need at least $21. 6 billion morein loans to put them on path towards recovery. The requests were part of plansthe auto makers were required to submit based on the terms of government loansthey received in early January.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 500 – Auto Club Speedway – Fontana CA After winning the rain-shortened Daytona 500 Matt Kenseth had a busy couple of days in New York with media obligations and television appearances including The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday and Live with Regis and Kelly the following day. Kenseth travels to San Francisco Wednesday for a victory tour and then to Los Angeles Thursday for more commitments before heading to Auto Club Speedway for the Auto Club 500. “I've had a lot of fun” Kenseth said. “I've really been enjoying the last two days a lot more than expected or maybe I thought I would. The only hiccup in the whole week so far is I'm locked out of my room in the hallway at the (Waldorf-Astoria Hotel). They turned their keys off so I'm in the hallway doing this call.

(GM) on Friday asked the Canadian government forhelp in covering fast-growing retiree costs. GM didn’t specify how much money it needs. But the company is looking to thegovernment to help cover ballooning pension obligations and the Canadian AutoWorkers union to help take over responsibility for medical costs as the UnitedAuto Workers did in the U. In exchange the auto maker said it would continue to build cars and trucks inCanada. In its request GM called the restructuring plan “achievable andtransformative. ” “Despite further North American market deterioration the restructuring planwill achieve long-term viability and enable [GM Canada] to repay Canadiantaxpayers” the company said.

The auto maker has lost more than $70billion since 2004. The moves failed to win over Wall Street for a number of reasons. GM so far has been unable to strike deals with the United Auto Workers andbond holders to convert nearly $30 billion of debt into equity. Negotiationscontinue with both groups. If GM reaches an agreement with the union and bond holders the company mayhave to offer billions in additional shares in debt-for-equity swaps furtherdiluting its stock.
