– You can understand Jeff Gordon’s point of view when he talks wistfully of Dale Jarrett’s departure from NASCAR Sprint Cup competition. Jarrett announced last year that the 2008 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race would be his last Cup event. Gordon’s not on the verge of retirement yet, but he can project ahead to a time when he’ll have more room for leisure activities.

A deal that could end an 80-day strike at auto parts maker American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. means hundreds of Saginaw workers also soon may return to work. The Detroit-based company boosted a wage offer and increased payments it will give workers to take a cut as part of a tentative agreement that could settle an 11-week strike by the United Auto Workers union, a person briefed on the deal said Saturday. The agreement is not finalized because workers must review it first, but auto officials in mid-Michigan are hopeful.

The worker had come to his union, CAW Local 195, and its president, Farnham, for help. He desperately needed a job after several months of layoff from the auto industry. Farnham recalls that tears streamed down the man’s cheeks. At 43, he could no longer make ends meet for himself and his family. He didn’t have enough money to go west in search of work. He pleaded for a job, any job… "The city estimates it has lost more than 10,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector during the past six years. Tourism, another top economic generator, has slid more than 50 per cent in the same period, in large part because of the strong Canadian dollar. Canada’s auto industry began here a century ago and expanded into a huge parts sector with numerous high-end tool, die and moulding companies. It weathered the industry’s ups and downs over the decades and always came back stronger than ever. Windsor became an industry powerhouse. But everyone agrees that this time, Windsor’s decline is different. Despite a big agricultural sector, the establishment of a local entertainment industry and more attention to auto research, the city is busting like never before.
