Axle strike forces more auto layoffs

DETROIT–A strike by workers at American Axle in the United States has forced more layoffs in Ontario’s auto sector. Formet Industries in St. which is owned by auto-parts giant Magna International and produces frames for General Motors pick-up trucks and utility vehicles laid off 1200 workers yesterday due to the strike. "We’re very concerned about it" said Canadian Auto Workers president Buzz Hargrove.

com The difficult transitions just keep coming for former open-wheel driver Patrick Carpentier. Carpentier is 46th in owners points 211 outside the top-35 cutoff after missing a pair of races because qualifying sessions were rained out and he also failed to make the field for the season-opening Daytona 500. So Carpentier is both happy to see an off weekend looming on the schedule and anxious to get his team into competitive form. Carpentier plans to take advantage of the opportunity to spend time with his family. After an opening stretch that included testing at Daytona International Speedway California Speedway Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway and then a lengthy pre-Daytona 500 walkup followed by four other race weekends Carpentier is ready for some down time in his native Canada.
