And like the ungainly beasts from past millennia they are rushing headlong toward extinction. The “ice age” that threatens to wipe out NASCAR’s dinosaurs — single-car teams — is a combination of the top-35 qualifying rule and NASCAR’s inclination to let multicar team owners play the shell game with the owner points that accrue to their cars. Even though there’s ample precedent for owner point swaps it’s time put this nonsense to an end. Why? Because the surest way to ensure the demise of single-car teams is to keep seeding the top 35 with drivers who don’t deserve to be there.

The title sponsorship continues LifeLock’s growing presence in NASCAR which previously included title sponsorship of the 2007 Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway and a variety of team deals with Rusty Wallace’s Nationwide Series outfit McClure Motorsports and BAM Racing. Todd Davis the CEO of LifeLock who has gained some measure of celebrity for including his Social Security number in LifeLock ads said the company has been looking at the title sponsorships for the Sprint Cup event at Chicagoland as well. Financial terms of the deal were not released but industry insiders peg the deal in the low seven figures. An announcement from the speedway on the LifeLock 400 is expected this week.
