Now Penske wants to end another drought by winning his first race since 2001 at the track he built — California Speedway in Fontana site of Sunday’s Auto Club 500 Sprint Cup race. Ryan Newman and his “best teammate ever” Kurt Busch gave Penske a 1-2 finish last Sunday in the Daytona 500. Newman hasn’t had a top-10 finish at California since 2005 but Busch has started from the pole in three of the past four Cup races at California since he began racing for Penske in 2006. “We’ve always run well at California we just haven’t gotten to victory lane” Newman said.

It must be something about trying to give West Coast fans as much up-close exposure as possible. Well maybe the powers that be at NASCAR and the speedway would do a better job of selling out the facility if they made races shorter in an effort to keep viewers from going into sleep-induced comas. In the past four years California races have lasted an average of 3 hours 38 minutes — or 56 minutes longer than the average Michigan race in that same span. Keep your events under three hours and you’ll make races much more palatable for everyone.

The job cuts will occur by the end of the year and represent about 15 percent of the work force in the auto loan business unit. The company which was once the finance arm of General Motors Corp.

Now in his second season in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series Ragan is ready to emulate Mark Martin right into victory lane. A year removed from being known as “Mark Martin’s replacement” in the Sprint Cup Series Ragan is looking to stand out on his own. Only 22 Ragan is making progress. He claimed the 2007 Raybestos Rookie of The Year in the Nationwide Series and finished fifth in the points standings.
