EU proposes legislation that would require deep cuts in auto emissions

Carmakers including Volkswagen and Renault immediately promised a fight to weaken the draft legislation saying that compliance would be difficult and that it would hurt their competitiveness on a global level. EU officials insisted the legislation was necessary if the region was to continue leading global efforts to reduce greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. A tough law for car pollution “demonstrates that the European Union is committed to being a world leader in cutting CO2 emissions and the development of a low-carbon economy” said José Manuel Barroso the president of the European Commission. The EU environment commissioner Stavros Dimas said that the industry's decade-old voluntary pledges to meet emissions reduction targets had not yielded the desired results making tougher action necessary.

19 2007| Page 2C Drivers and race cars will be out in force Thursday during a season-ending open house hosted by Bill McAnally Racing at its Antelope shop 8636 Antelope North Road. Drivers from McAnally’s NASCAR Grand National West Series and late-model team will sign autographs and answer questions. Fans can tour the race shop see how race cars are made and peek inside haulers. Vintage NASCAR Cup cars also will be on display. Owner Bill McAnally will preview the 2008 season including his team’s participation in NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program.

Bajaj Auto demerger earns court approval

18: Bombay High Court has approved the demerger of Bajaj Auto. The demerger will create two new entities apart from a company that will focus only on the auto business. After the demerger there will be three separate entities a company for auto business an entity that will hold Bajaj Auto’s investments in financial services called Bajaj Finserv and the consumer finance company Bajaj Auto Finance. Bajaj Finserv Ltd will include investments in the two insurance companies Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company Ltd and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Company Ltd. Bajaj Auto officials declined to comment on the issue stating that the company was yet to receive the final order from the court. The court approval did not have much impact on the Baja Auto scrip and it ended marginally higher at Rs 2795.

Spartanburg County sheriff’s deputies are seeking the public’s help in finding a Greer man suspected of several automobile thefts and other crimes. Shan Dale Sweet 37 of 106 Westfield Ave. is wanted on charges of receiving stolen goods two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle three counts of malicious injury to property failure to stop for blue light and driving under suspension. He is about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. Anyone with information on Sweet’s whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 503-4527 or CrimeStoppers at 58-CRIME.
