Nippon Steel President Akio Mimura and Tata Steel Chairman Ratan Tata met in Japan last month and discussed joint venture prospects he said. India is a promising market for makers of high-grade steel products like Nippon Steel as foreign auto makers eye aggressive expansion there. Japanese car makers with operations in India include Suzuki Motor Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. Along with its domestic allies Nippon Steel is forging closer ties with other partners including South Korea’s Posco amid growing concern over the competitive threat posed by Arcelor Mittal. While Nippon Steel remains cautious about making investments to build new blast furnaces it is going on the offensive by teaming up with overseas partners and supplying high-end steel to auto makers and shipbuilders.
