After finishing 10th in the Checker Auto Parts 500 and losing another 56 points to Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson in the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Gordon placed his finger squarely on the carotid artery of his championship hopes and found no pulse. “It’s over” Gordon pronounced with the finality of a disconsolate surgeon calling the time of death of a patient he expected to save. Now 86 points behind Johnson with only the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway standing between his teammate and the title Gordon revealed the depth of his disappointment in the stark realism of his concession speech. In the bitter aftermath of Sunday’s race which Johnson won Gordon knew that when the final results are tallied next Sunday in Florida the Supreme Court won’t have to step in to affirm the winner.

(AP) — Ryan Briscoe replaced Sam Hornish after the three-time IndyCar Series champion moved to Penske’s NASCAR team. Briscoe will team with two-time Indy 500 Champion Helio Castroneves. “He did a terrific job at Indianapolis this year and delivered for us in our ALMS program. “Obviously he has big shoes to fill with Sam moving over to our NASCAR team but he has shown us that he has the talent to win in the IndyCar Series.

Drivers and co-workers alike are constantly collaborating on how to get the cars to handle week in and week out. The result has been HMS domination of the Nextel Cup circuit in 2007 – more than half the wins have been by Hendrick drivers.

Gillett owner of the NHL Montreal Canadiens and the English Premier League’s Liverpool soccer team has expanded his reach in the realm of major sports with his purchase of majority interest in what is now Gillett Evernham Motorsports. On Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway Gillett fielded questions from the media and discussed his perceptions of the sport and plans for the team which will field cars for Kasey Kahne Elliott Sadler and Patrick Carpentier next year. Q: What’s more complicated owning a NASCAR team or an NHL team?A: I think NASCAR’s more complicated. It’s not any one thing.
