– Jimmie Johnson won his fourth straight race the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway to expand his lead over Jeff Gordon in the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup putting the driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet in position to win his second straight championship next Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Fifth on a restart on Lap 275 after the 10th caution of the race Johnson moved quickly to the front passing Matt Kenseth for second position on Lap 283 and powering past Martin Truex Jr. for the lead on Lap 288 of the 312-lap race. From that point on Johnson pulled away to record his series- and career-best 10th victory of season.

– To call Jeff Gordon disappointed after his 10th-place finish in Sunday’s Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway might be the understatement of the week. Gordon’s postrace comments which included the words “It’s over” in reference to the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup were tantamount to a concession speech. Though Gordon swapped sheet metal with Kevin Harvick during an on-track battle late in the race the four-time champion blamed his failure to contend for the win on an ill-handling car not on contact with Harvick’s No. “It didn’t affect it” Gordon said.

That gives Waltrip 16 years in which he wins at least one pole a record for the modern era (since 1972). Waltrip finishes 16th three laps behind race winner Dale Earnhardt. Waltrip completes his Cup career in 2000 with 59 poles a modern-era record that is broken in 2007 when Jeff Gordon captures his 60th pole for the spring Talladega race. I’m talking about the Democratic leaders in the House and Senate who are trying to push through a controversial Senate bill that has unrealistic fuel economy mandates and doesn’t take into account the difference between cars and trucks. As an auto dealership owner I’ve seen firsthand the improvements that U. automakers have made in fuel economy in their cars and trucks.

In Search of Savers: 401(k) Rules Are Changing

And second they wanted them to invest more of their money in stocks which have outperformed bonds and money markets over the long term. To meet those goals the new rules make it easier for employers to automatically enroll employees in their plans though they aren’t required to do so. The default investment for auto-enrolled employees will include stocks though workers who want to choose on their own will have other options. There is plenty of evidence both anecdotal and statistical that workers save more for retirement when much of the decision-making is taken out of their hands. “Rules that make it easier for people to participate automatically are really important” Hersh Shefrin a professor of behavioral finance at Santa Clara University wrote in a recent e-mail message. “The most important reason people don’t save enough for retirement is that they lack sufficient self-control. Basically most people find it difficult to delay gratification… Basically most people find it difficult to delay gratification. ” Requiring employees to “opt out” rather than “opt in” to retirement plans has increased participation rates several studies have shown. Of course even with auto-enrollment employees can still opt out if they don’t want to participate for example if they think they have better options elsewhere. The trend toward auto-enrollment has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. Until now most companies put auto-enrolled employees into money market accounts or equivalent investments where capital preservation was guaranteed. Retirement benefits experts say employers did not want to be sued if such employees were put into portfolios that lost money.
