– I can’t believe what I’m hearing. The preponderance of opinion I’ve heard from both legitimate and self-appointed pundits lately is that the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup has become a bore. How can that be? Last time I looked — which was right after Jimmie Johnson crossed the finish line in Sunday’s Pep Boys Auto 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway — Johnson was a mere nine points behind Chase leader Jeff Gordon with three races left to determine the series champion. That was the same day the Boston Red Sox were completing a sweep of the Colorado Rockies in the World Series the Indianapolis Colts were dusting the Carolina Panthers 31-7 and the New England Patriots were clobbering the Washington Redskins 52-7. Those contests weren’t close. The Chase certainly is.
