(AP) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. isn’t so much melancholy about leaving his late father’s team as he is agitated about the way his final season at Dale Earnhardt Inc. “We feel we missed a great opportunity this year with a great chance of winning the championship and challenging for it and we’re really ticked off about that” said Junior who failed to qualify for NASCAR’s Chase for the Nextel Cup championship for the second time in three years.

– David Reutimann’s victory Saturday wasn’t as much about performance as it was about survival. A race-record 25 caution periods in the Sam’s Town 250 NASCAR Busch Series race at Memphis Motorsports Park made sure of that. Still Reutimann’s performance was pretty good. He scored the first Busch win of his career by dominating the race leading 194 of the 253 laps though many of those were under yellow. The only challenge Reutimann faced — other than dodging the cautions — was an outside move by Mike Bliss with nine laps left.

– Kyle Busch held off Ron Hornaday Jr. in an eight-lap green-flag run to the finish Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway to win the EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. In winning for the first time in eight starts this year — and for the fifth time in his career — Busch became the first repeat winner in the series at Atlanta.

– Though he says it’s not a slight directed specifically at Dale Earnhardt Inc. owner Teresa Earnhardt Steve Hmiel said he noticed one immediate difference when he signed on as manager of competition at Chip Ganassi Racing. “First thing is I saw an owner at the racetrack” said Hmiel who parted ways with DEI last week after a nine-year tenure there. “I saw an owner (Chip Ganassi) at the racetrack who wanted to boost his group a little bit.
