I like my sports with a little drama and friend against friend owner against employee and master against student all qualify. If only Gordon and Johnson would get in some kind of catfight the sport would have dramatic gold. As it is the Gordon-Johnson relationship covers three of the four.

– Joey Logano lived up to his billing Saturday night. The 17-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing development driver took the lead on Lap 164 of the fifth Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale Speedway and held it the rest of the way. In winning the 250-lap marquee event in the Grand National Division the Busch East champion became the first series winner to go to victory lane in the Showdown which features the top drivers from the Busch East and NASCAR West Series. It was the seventh Grand National victory of the season for Logano who won five times in 13 starts in the Busch East Series and once in the West Series. The Showdown victory also marked the fifth time this season Logano has won at a track on his first visit. Logano’s lead survived three late cautions including the 12th and final yellow-flag period which produced a two-lap dash to the finish.

– Dale Earnhardt Jr. ‘s engine problems continued Sunday in the Subway 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Six times this season he has failed to finish a race because of problems with an engine in his Dale Earnhardt Inc. He had problems again Sunday but this time he was able to nurse the car to the finish line. Earnhardt’s engine began stumbling early just past the 150-lap mark.

Participants from Russia have been keen tourists travelling in auto rickshaws around the city instead of the team buses. It was an amusing sight watching a group of men and women in tracksuits with the accreditation badges around their necks trying to settle the fare with the auto driver. The first hurdle was explaining the destination and it was quite heartening to see the military guards posted outside the games villages ready to lend a helping hand to the Russians. Of course with athletes’ accommodation at more than seven places spread around the city the participants have not had much opportunity to interact with one another and that perhaps has given them more time to tour the historic city.
