23 The United Automobile Workers union in an unexpected move late last night set a Monday morning strike deadline in negotiations with General Motors. The action signaled that there had been a major snag in talks that had appeared to be heading toward a new contract.

– After a placid start to the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup last week at New Hampshire all hell broke loose Sunday at the Monster Mile. Carl Edwards survived a battle of attrition — or as he put it a game of Russian roulette — to win the Dodge Dealers 400 at Dover International Speedway on a day the Chase competitors suffered a litany of troubles. Edwards and Kyle Busch were the only two Chase competitors among the six drivers to finish on the lead lap as Edwards held off Roush Fenway teammate Greg Biffle by. 617 seconds after a restart on Lap 397 to win his third Cup race of the season and the seventh of his career.

There’s a 3-foot-wide bookshelf in Marty Kaliski’s auto repair shop that holds repair manuals for dozens of models of cars from 1964 to 1978. Today the documentation for one model alone – for just one year – would fill that entire shelf. So Kaliski owner of Marty’s Motors in El Cerrito no longer buys printed manuals for new cars. Instead he subscribes to three online information services that offer millions of pages of diagnostic information. There are computers with Internet access at each service bay so his technicians can find the information they need.

4 pct year-on-year commerce minister Bo Xilai said. In a statement published on the ministry’s website Bo said China has become the second-largest auto market and the third-largest auto producing country in the world. In the first seven months China exported 294000 automobiles up 70.
