Guangzhou Auto one of China’s 10 largest carmakers by units sold last month hired investment banks China International Capital Corp. JP Morgan Chase & Co.

The trade group for nine of the biggest automakers funded full-page newspaper ads holding out sport utility vehicles as the potential loser as the Senate debates a bill that would force automakers to produce more fuel-efficient cars and trucks. Bill backers counter that raising fuel economy will increase national security lower carbon emissions blamed for global warming and save consumers money as they buy less gas. The conflicting views point to what’s likely to be a bumpy road ahead as the Senate debates its wide-ranging energy bill which seeks among other changes to raise the fuel standard for cars for the first time in 18 years. Automakers are mounting a fierce opposition to the proposal arguing that the cost will threaten the already imperiled industry.

The theme was “It’s Time” as in it’s time for DaimlerChrysler to again have a major presence in the sport that Dodges Plymouths and Chryslers once ruled. The reality has been something less than sensational. Despite hooking up with some serious shakers and movers — people like Ray Evernham Chip Ganassi and Roger Penske — in the team ownership field and despite the presence of drivers like Kasey Kahne Bill Elliott Ryan Newman Kurt Busch Rusty Wallace and Bobby Labonte Dodge has underachieved.
