United Auto Workers Support Chrysler Sale

While private equity is generally looking to cut costs by cutting jobs and benefits unions are busy trying to protect them. So the United Auto Workers’ endorsement of the sale of Chrysler to private equity firm Cerberus has come as a surprise to many. Until recently UAW head Ron Gettelfinger was no fan of private equity firms. Earlier this year he warned that if such a firm took over Chrysler it would “strip and flip” the automaker selling off its assets and destroy the company.

The first-generation C-Class offered a “Sport” upgrade package that tightened the handling; the current C-Class elevated “Sport” to a trim line which currently accounts for about 65 percent of C-Class volume. Yet customers and dealers lamented that the 4MATIC all-wheel drive option was not available with the Sport trim line. The all-new 2008 C-Class will offer a separate Sport model series clearly delineated by design feature content and handling performance. The 2008 C-Class Sport models wear the brand’s “coupe” front end styling which uses a simpler grille with a large star emblem in place of the C-Class Luxury models’ traditional Mercedes grille and hood ornament.

Bajaj Auto is working on a plan to float an auto and autocomponent SEZ company converting 260 acres of land to an auto-focused SEZ atWaluj where Bajaj Auto?s manufacturing facility is located. BajajAuto?s Waluj facility is spread over 1000 acres of which 300 acres isdedicated to its existing manufacturing plant. Recently the Union governmenthad notified Bajaj Auto?s SEZ application focused on auto and autocomponent manufacturing. Sources close to the development said sinceRahul Bajaj?s younger son Sanjiv Bajaj who is the executive director ofBajaj Auto will head the investment arm extending his current function offinance and exports it stands to reason that Bajaj Auto?s SEZ will bepart of his inheritance.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said that auto output in the four-month period rose 21. 36 pct from a year earlier to around 3 mln units.

– NASCAR penalized Bill Davis Racing on Tuesday for allowing an unlicensed driver behind the wheel of Johnny Benson’s truck during a test session last week. Mike Lichty a friend of Benson’s took some laps in Benson’s truck during Thursday’s test at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Lichty wrecked and NASCAR kicked the team out of the test when it discovered Benson wasn’t behind the wheel. Benson was fined $10000 and docked 50 points and crew chief Trip Bruce was suspended for two races. “We agree with the penalties NASCAR has issued to the 23 team and we will deal with them accordingly” team owner Bill Davis said.
