The transition is already underway. Gerry Fedchun the president of the Canadian Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association has counted some 38 bankruptcies in the industry in recent years along with a number of plant closings. Employment has fallen from a peak of 106100 employees in 2002 to about 92000 now. Some of this decline reflects the fall-off in North American auto sales and loss of competitiveness due to the higher exchange rate but increasingly the challenge will come from growing competition from countries like Mexico China and India the push by auto assemblers to drive down costs and the redesign of automobiles which in turn affects the kinds of components needed as is happening for example with the shift to hybrid cars.
