Earnhardt recognized Gordon as a huge talent and cherished their on-track battles knowing each victory was a win over a driver destined to go down as one of the best. It’s fact yet many Earnhardt fans choose to ignore it. They pretend the two drivers were bitter rivals two very different men with nothing in common. If there’s one lesson to be learned from the Aaron’s 499 weekend at Talladega it’s that the flaws in the current qualifying system far outweigh the benefits. Specifically I’m talking about the free pass given to the top 35 in owner points a system that rewards mediocrity and perpetuates the status quo. At Talladega there were 52 drivers competing for 43 starting spots. The top 35 in owner points were guaranteed places in the field for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499. ne other driver Dale Jarrett also knew he’d race on Sunday thanks to the safety net of his final past champion’s provisional.

Wheldon was 10 seconds ahead of Dario Franchitti late in the Kansas Lottery Indy 300 won under caution when Scott Sharp crashed with two laps to go yesterday. It was Wheldon’s second victory in four races this year along with the season opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway and the 13th of his career. The win gave him a shot of momentum for the race that matters most to him — the Indianapolis 500. “We’re ready to go for the big one now” said Wheldon who won at Indianapolis in 2005 on his way to the IndyCar Series points title.
