(April 27 2007) — NASCAR announced Friday afternoonthat driver Tony Stewart has been fined $10000 and placed on probationuntil Dec. 31 for missing the post-race news conference after finishingsecond in last Saturday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix InternationalRaceway.

Sales Analysis Manager George Pipas said Friday that U. auto industry sales in April appear to be on pace to post a surprising 10% decline from year-earlier levels. Pipas in a telephone interview said he can’t quite explain the market’s abrupt downturn in April. He said key factors that may be dragging down April sales – such as high gasoline prices weak housing data and slumping confidence – were already prevalent in the first quarter.
