Daimler joins Chery to build cars for US in China

DaimlerChrysler the first foreign car maker to set up manufacturing in China is joining with Chery because higher costs such as labour and health care make it difficult to build small cars profitably in the United States. Chrysler chief Tom LaSorda said last month that the auto maker was in talks with Chery and an unidentified European company on a small-car partnership. "This is big" said Rebecca Lindland an auto analyst at forecasting firm Global Insight Inc. "If the Chinese could pull this off and provide a high-quality low-cost vehicle in the U… He declined to discuss production volume or financial details. "We need a Chinese partner who can help us boost revenue and keep costs under control" Mr. LaSorda told journalists in Beijing last month.
