stocks staged a broad rally on Wednesday with the Dow rising above 12500 to end at a record as positive news for Ford Motor Co. (F) and other automakers as well as for home builders such as Toll Brothers (TL) spurred buying during what is already a traditionally strong week for equities. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 102. 83 percent to end at a record 12510.

com 12-27-2006 13:33China’s National Reform and Development Commission has announced a new plan to curb the surging investment in the auto industry in an effort to cool the economy. Under the new controls automakers that want to expand their factories have to show that sales exceeded 80 percent of last year’s authorized output. The main association for Chinese automakers said auto sales were expected to grow by 22 percent this year to 7 million vehicles and expand by another 15 percent next year. Experts predicted that the latest controls are likely to have a bigger impact on foreign investors such as the world’s major automakers like General Motors and Volkswagen AG.

In Segamat car mechanics and auto cleaners have been working hard all day and night since last Friday to ensure everybody in town would be able to move freely again. Local car mechanic Hamidun Yahmu 30 said that he and his partner had repaired more than 40 vehicles since they resumed their operation last Friday. Like everyone else he was also affected by the worst floods in decades in the state. Hamidun estimated that more than 1000 vehicles in Segamat alone were affected by the district’s worst flood on Dec 19.
