"ver all we expect current trends to persist: High competitive pressures high raw material costs largely unfavourable foreign exchange rates for the export-oriented [auto makers] and the ongoing need to invest in low-cost countries and in efficiency-improving measures in order to preserve — as far as possible — the overall meagre levels of profitability" said the rating agency’s auto analysts. Sales will fall in North America this year from 2005 levels and again in 2007 from this year’s levels S&P said in a report card on the global auto industry. Deliveries in Canada the United States and Mexico are on a declining trend from the 17-million-vehicle level hit in 2000 S&P noted.

Tony Van Alphen Business Reporter Canada’s struggling auto parts sector says the federal government is not addressing its concerns as industry conditions deteriorate. The Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association indicated in a policy paper yesterday that ttawa’s progress is "poor" in dealing with almost 20 issues ranging from tax credits and immigration to training assistance and border bottlenecks. "Canadian tax policies and lack of productivity-enhancing incentives in Canada act as a deterrent to Canadian manufacturers" the 14-page paper concluded. Association president Gerald Fedchun said the government has shown no progress in some areas and clearly needs to act. ttawa and the ntario government have each committed $500 million in aid including a research and training component to attract new investment to the auto sector in Canada.
