That’s the paradox that faced team owner Jack Roush between the end of the 2005 season and the beginning of the 2006 campaign. With five cars in the 2005 Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Roush reasoned that it was better to stay with a pat hand for 2006. The problem was if Roush entered the 2006 season with the motorsports equivalent of a flush competing owners showed up with full houses thanks to gains made during the offseason. “If you’re on top which we were” Roush said “the conservative nature and the conventional wisdom here is that you want to be slow to make changes because if you fix something that’s not broken it may not work as well as it was before you fixed it. So for that reason we’ve been somewhat hesitant to make massive changes and I don’t think massive changes throughout the year have been warranted.
